The Lord’s Prayer: Understanding Matthew 6:9-13.

The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer Jesus Christ taught His disciples when they asked Him to teach them how to pray.

They have been seeing Jesus Christ go out to the mountains to pray, but they didn’t know how to pray themselves. So one day they decided to ask Him to teach them how to pray.

We all know the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus Christ taught His disciples, but the truth of the matter is that a lot of us don’t understand it.

I have recited this prayer ever since I learnt to talk. In my church we recite it and even in school.

But if someone was to ask me to explain it to them, I would have simply told them that it is just a prayer Jesus taught His disciples.

But I want you to know that it is more than just a prayer. What Jesus taught His disciples in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-13, was a kingdom culture.

Am sure you would be wondering what am saying, but don’t worry, I will do my best to decode and help you understand the lord’s prayer better so you can also teach others and help them understand it also.

Now let’s dive into it.

The Lord’s Prayer: Understanding Matthew 6:9-13.

Matthew 6:7-13 King James Version (KJV)

  1. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
  2. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
  3. Give us this day our daily bread.
  4. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
  5. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Before we start looking at the scriptures, I want you to know these;

  1. Jesus Christ came to earth to redeem man from sins and restore back what man lost (Dominion over the earth).
  2. Jesus Christ also came to establish the kingdom of God on earth. And to do that He has to teach us the kingdom culture which includes how to pray Kingdom based prayers.

If you can recall, His first ever preaching to us was a simple one. He said and I quote;

“Repent for the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is at hand” – Matthew 4:17

In other words, you have to renew your mind now and get ready to unlearn and relearn. Why? Because a new kingdom has arrived.

With this knowledge, let’s now take a look at the kingdom based prayer that Jesus Christ taught His disciples.

Matthew 6:7-13 (KJV)

The verse 9 of Matthew 6 says;

“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name”.

This was a simple instruction to the disciples. If you want to pray He said, then this is how you should pray.

OUR FATHER: OUR means that prayer is never supposed to be just about you alone.

For most of us prayer is just about; Me, Myself and I. But Jesus is simply saying that it’s not supposed to be so.

In other words, whenever you approach God in prayer, it should not just be about your own personal interest alone.

OUR FATHER WHICH ART IN HEAVEN: secondly Jesus was saying to them; you have to understand that the King (God) who sent me God is in another country called Heaven.

In other word, the colonial power that sent me to redeem mankind from sin and recolonize earth by establishing His kingdom here on earth is in a distant country called Heaven.

When I said recolonize, it simply means that the earth was temporally taken from the original ambassador’s man, by the devil during the fall of man to sin In Genesis chapter 3.

But God sent Christ to redeem it.

2 Corinthians 5:17-18 (NIV)

  1. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: [a] the old has gone, the new is here!
  2. All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

The last part of Matthew 6:9 says;

Jesus simply telling them that, after they acknowledge where the king is, they have to reverence and praise Him.

I believe you are getting the understanding on the Lord’s Prayer.

Please if you are not clear on any part of the message please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I will be very glad to explain and also learn from you.

The verse 10 of Matthew 6 says. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

THY KINGDOM COME: Jesus was simply telling them to call for the kingdom which the king (God) wants to establish to.

This simply shows that they are in agreement with the kingdom and they have agreed to live in the kingdom and learn it ways and culture.

A lot of believer recite the Lord’s Prayer but don’t these facts.

THY WILL BE DONE IN EARTH, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN: This simply means that the Gods will which is to make the earth a colony and a perfect place just as it is in His country Heaven should come to pass.

Wow… this is indeed an amazing revelation.

The verse 11 of Matthew 6 says. “Give us this day our daily bread”.

Here they are simply to ask for daily supply of food and provision. Do you remember what happened when the children of Israel were leaving Egypt?

God supplied them daily (see Exodus 16). In other words, you have to trust God who is your father, for your provisions.

This also implies that God is responsible for your well-being if you are in His kingdom. Jesus Christ speaking said in Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.

In other words, if you are in the kingdom, supply is sure. A lot of people interpret this as being idle and waiting for God to throw down food. But that’s not it.

God has given you brains and abilities to work and He expects you to use them. Jesus is simply saying that the kingdom should come first. You don’t have to prioritize work over the kingdom.

From experience, I can assure you that, everything will fall in place for you, if you put God and His Kingdom first in all you do.

A lot changed about me after I studied the Lord’s Prayer and understood this principle. And am sure you will also be impacted and transformed by this truth if you apply it.

The verse 12 of Matthew says. “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors’.

And forgive us our debts: In those days the disciples were still under the law and sin, so it was paramount for them to ask for forgiveness.

Romans 3:23 (NIV): “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.

But you have to understand that we are no longer under the law and Jesus Christ has delivered us from all our past, present and future sin.

Galatians 3:13 (NIV): Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

Also Jesus Christ also let the disciples know that they have to learn to forgive if they want God to forgive them.

In other words, forgiveness is a kingdom practice. If you want the king to forgive you and honor your request in prayer, you have to forgive others.

Jesus speaking in Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV) said;

  1. “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you,
  2. Leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

In other words, don’t Jesus Christ is simply saying that we should first make peace with everyone who we have offended or who have offended us before we come before God to present our offering.

It’s not easy, but that is the culture in the kingdom of God. If you understand this, and apply it, you will surely leave a kingdom life which is worry free.

This is indeed the Lord’s Prayer. And it’s important for everyone to understand this simply but profound concept about the kingdom of God and prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer is a simple one if you understand it as you should.

The verse 13 of Matthew 6 says; “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen”.

Jesus concluded by telling they to pray to God not to lead them into any form of temptation but He should rather deliver them from the evil one.

The Common English Bible puts it this way;

Matthew 6:13 (CEB): And don’t lead us into temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

Jesus knows what He was talking about when He ask them to pray that they should not be lead to be tempted. This is because He has being in that position before.

Matthew 4:1 (NIV): Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil.

Jesus Christ taught them to end their prayer this way; “for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. amen”.

To fully understand this, we have to understand the words. Take note,

The word ‘Thine’ according to oxford dictionary is an a pronoun and it is an

Archaic form of yours.

Therefore, this scripture and be paraphrased this way; “for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. amen”.

In other words, God owns the kingdom and He poses all the power of the Kingdom and its glory.

The greatest miracle is SALVATION.

The greatest miracle happens when you accept Jesus Christ. The bible said in 2corinthians 5:17;

“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”

The moment you accept Jesus Christ, every negative thing in your life comes to an end.

If you have not met Jesus, I want to pray specially for you.

Just pray this prayer after me;

“Lord Jesus Christ, I come to you today as a sinner, I cannot help myself. Please forgive me of all my sins, I believe in my heart that you died for me and you were raised up by God.

Today, I accept you lord Jesus Christ as my lord and saviour.

Cleanse me with your precious blood; deliver me from sin to serve you. Thank you, Jesus, for saving me. Now I know that I am born again by your mighty name… Amen
